If you are employed or self employed in the nail and beauty industry and based in Scotland you may qualify for funding. Receive 50% of course fees paid from Skills Development Scotland through the Flexible Training Opportunities initiative. You must apply by 31st March 2012 and your training must finish before 30th June. The VRQ Nail course term starts April 2012 and is candidate driven but a realistic timeframe for completion is in November 2012. In between the training sessions you are required to compile a portfolio of evidence which is of theory work and practical case studies. This can be performed within your home. VTCT are launching on-line e-portfolio very soon for this course and we hope to integrate this making your paperwork far easier to manage.

Cosmetology training classes are held within our salon, we are a boutique style set up and aim to keep small classes sizes so our educators can give you 1-2-1 attention. We really focus on attention to detail, as an employer we know what is required in a therapist. Work experience opportunities are available which will help provide great evidence towards your portfolio and give you confidence in being 'work ready'. We can also provide a reference which will help your career prospects. Work experience is also scheduled around your time so if you are working then even a few hours here and there is beneficial to your coursework.

All the courses include up-to-date product knowledge of O.P.I systems and include kits, training manuals and DVD from OPI.

The cost of the VRQ is:

Eyelash extensions are one of the most popular treatments sought by women today and it is our most popular training course with each month our classes being full.

We have been using Lash fx for over 3 years due to their product range being so fantastic and the company is at the forefront of eyelash extension technology.

Lash fx is a sister company of the brand Lash Perfect; same great products and adored by celebrities.

Our class sizes are small, maximum of 6 students at any one time so our educators can provide 1-2-1 tuition. You will work on each other so you know the client experience, but most importantly you are working on a 'live' model.

Being perfectly honest, the treatment involves good eyesight and patience and after a couple of practices you have mastered the technique. Your speed will come in time but it is important to achieve longevity of the eyelash extensions and by doing this you must apply and remove them correctly and safely.

Funding Opportunities

At the moment we can accept ILA funding for this course, you need to apply for your ILA number which you can by visiting ILA Scotland website

ILA funding can help towards the course fees and up to £200.00 - this means you only need to pay the balance of £55+vat.

Once you have received your ILA number you can apply to book on a course by completing a Cosmetology Application Form. We can only process your ILA booking at least 2 weeks prior to the course actual start date.

The challenge of saving the orangutan - man's closest relative - from extinction is trickling down to the weekly shop.

Many of the biscuits, margarines, breads, crisps and even bars of soap that consumers pick off supermarket shelves contain an ingredient that is feeding a growth industry that conservationists say is killing the orangutans.
The mystery ingredient in the mix is palm oil - the cheapest source of vegetable oil available - and one that rarely appears on the label of most products.
Palm oil is grown on land that was once home to the vast rainforests of Borneo, and the natural habitat of the orangutan.

'Nuisance'
The orangutans, displaced as the trees of old-growth forests are burned and at times killed by workers who see them as a nuisance in the logging process, are not the only victims of the runaway growth in palm oil - scientists say there is a wider environmental price being paid.

What can we do?

Like every year, Cosmetology raise money and awareness for a charity and this year it is dedicated to 'Saving the Orangutans'

Cosmetology Owner Nicola Jones says - 'Palm Oil production is on my doorstep, it is the 2nd most widely produced edible oil after soybean with 28 million tons produced annually'

Lone Droscher Nielson - Founder of BOSF

The charity funds will be donated to the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation,(BOSF) where lies a rehabilitation centre deep in the heart of Borneo Jungle. At this centre the aim is to care 24 hours a day for the baby orangutans, as they have lost their mother in traumatic events. Adult orangutuan's which have been found starving, injured, or ill are also looked after and released back into the wild once they are fit enough to survive on their own.

The biggest wish for Lone Droscher Nielson, founder of the (BOSF) is for people in the western world to understand what is happening here in Borneo, and how the demand for palm oil is devastating the rainforests and contributing to the extinction of the orangutan. Forests are being destroyed at the rate of an area roughly the size of two football fields every minute in the country, contributing massively to climate change and driving the orangutan closer to extinction with the loss of every acre. Orangutans are so much like us, yet we humans are killing them by the thousand.

There is no need for this continual destruction of the rainforests for oil-palm plantations. There is already open grassland that can be used for this purpose, but we need pressure from the international community and to educate people about the dangers to our environment that is being caused by the world's consumption of palm oil.

Rainforests aren't just beautiful, they are there for a purpose. They help control the climate by absorbing carbon dioxide, prevent drought because they're an important part of the water cycle, and help put a check on soil erosion. But they are also home to 420 species of birds, 210 species of mammals, 254 species of reptiles, and 368 species of freshwater fish.

Duration

Course Requirements

The Level 2 Certificate in Beauty Specialist Techniques route to competence certification is comprised of 3 key stages.

The three key stages are:

Stage 1: The Initial Training Programme

Delegates successfully completing the Initial Training Programme will be awarded a Stage 1 Training Certificate; this entitles the delegate to progress to Stage 2: supervised workplace experience.

Stage 2: Supervised workplace experience

Stage 2 specifies the series of supervised tasks which the candidate will be required to complete in order to gain relevant experience in the workplace. The candidate must complete a log book record of the supervised tasks. Cosmetology can help you with work experience opportunities and this will platform you to being work ready and competent. You will also be able to receive a reference.

Stage 3: Competence Assessment

Stage 3 specifies the assessment process and criteria for the candidate to demonstrate competence in the role of applying semi-permanent eyelash extensions. Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Competence from awarding body VTCT.

Course Cost for Stage 2 & 3: VTCT VRQ Level 2 Beauty Specialist Techniques Certified

This will allow you to work internationally in a beauty salon. You can apply for this course if you already have completed the initial training, even from another training provider. This allows you to advance your skills and develop your qualification to be internationally recognisable.

To achieve Stage 2 you must be able to perform voluntary supervised work experience within a beauty salon environment. Cosmetology can offer this facility and you will need to organise this with you Assessor. You must use your own kit at all times when performing case studies.

A fee of £950+vat is made payable to Cosmetology Scotland Ltd to achieve the Stage 3 Competence Assessment and is payable when you start your Stage 2 logbook. This course package does not include training in the subject areas or any kits. It is merely competency assessment to achieve the qualification.

Your VTCT registration fees are included.

On completion of the Stage 3 competency programme you will be awarded a Certificate in L2 Beauty Specialist Techniques from awarding body VTCT. This qualification is required by Employers and if you wish to work internationally.

DON'T BE A NAIL STUDENT VICTIM
Today's blog is about the learning Nail Enhancements at Level 3 and my honest opinion on what should not be delivered in a training class.

Had I known about the OPI Full foundation course when I first started learning nail extensions over 10 years ago, I would have loved to join this course. It has been designed so that you as the student reach all the objectives in learning Acrylic, Gel & Colour Gel Nails in 7 class days over an 8 week period. You will receive a full kit that will last you throughout the course and more and a training folder with all the up-to-date information, product knowledge and guidelines on the OPI systems. All portfolio material and assignments for you to work on when out of class and support from your Educator throughout class days and after.

All OPI Educators have been vetted by OPI to ensure you are receiving training from an occupationally qualified and competent nail technician.

It is critical to learn nail extensions if you wish to keep up with the today's trends and it is a global market. Wherever you are in the world, a nail technician is required and you will only be able to fulfil a job role if you have the right competency in the first place. To achieve this level of competency it is imperative that you choose a training course that can teach you at this level and this is OPI's objective.

The full foundation course consists of learning Acrylic Nail Enhancements, Gel Nail Enhancements and Soak Off Colour Gel. You require to have a qualification in manicure prior to starting the course. I cannot understand why there are courses offered for nail extensions that allow you to enrol with no manicure training, you cannot simply skip to a Level 3 course when you are not competent and knowledgable at Level 2.

Each training day is allocated certain objectives and learning outcomes which have to be met, it will solely be a training environment dedicated to learning about nail extensions, no other training courses are offered and the Educator provides 100% commitment to delivering NAIL training.

I have heard from some students who have been the victim and suffered poor training, delivered by an Educator who is also offering other courses at the same time. I cannot believe this is allowed in the industry but unfortunately this is only one sad story, there have been many.

Don't let it be too late and enrol on such courses, once you have paid your money to these training providers you will be the next victim. Over the years, this behaviour has never changed by these companies, and they will tell you anything just to have you as a customer.

Investing with OPI is a true, honest investment. OPI is about quality, customers associate OPI as quality and if you wish to work with the number 1 nail brand in the world then you are a step away from being involved with quality. All the staff members at Cosmetology will be providing the nail treatments to the celebrities at the MOBO awards in October 2011, if you wish to build your porfolio and have an opportunity to work on shoots then this can happen as an OPI nail technician.

So 4 places are left on our last Full Foundation course starting end of September 2011, and I hope reading my blog has given you an insight to look beyond glossy, shiny brochures that promise you everything. Think very carefully into what you want to achieve and how you can achieve it, as OPI will always be here to offer you that.

Our August Waxing course has not even started and I am blogging to let you know about our last waxing course in November. This is because we are fully booked and I don't want you missing out until 2012. As we can accept ILA for the waxing course this allows you to apply and receive your ILA number in plenty time. Remember we can only process your booking with you ILA number and at least 2 weeks prior to course start date, no later.

Monday 28th & Tuesday 29th November 2011 - WARM WAX TRAINING COURSE
This course allows the complete beginner to learn warm waxing techniques. The structure and course content over the 2 days is as follows:
• Health & Safety

• Contraindications/Contra-actions
• Product Knowledge of Harley Wax
• Aftercare Advice and Maintenance
• Structure of the skin and hair

You can progress your techniques to learn hot waxing on this half day course, however if you are experienced and qualified in waxing you can apply to learn hot waxing and Brazilian waxing.

Brazilian Waxing Course Cost: £195+vat includes hot wax kit.

Hot & Warm Waxing Course: £180+vat for training fees and £140+vat for warm wax and hot wax kit fees.

The class schedule starts with Facial Training on the 5th & 6th September 2011.

A training course for those who wish to learn about the skin, commen complaints and preventative measures.

You will learn anatomy and physiology of the face, head and neck and about the different skin types and concerns and how you can treat them effectively.

Students on our facial training course will receive an Eve Taylor Aromatherapy Facial Kit which includes all the products you need to perform a facial on a dry, combination, oil, sensitive and ageing skin type.

You will learn how to perform a facial treatment including skin cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation techniques, facial massage and benefits, mask application and aftercare advice.

This is an excellent course if you are interested learning about the skin for your own benefits and to perform on clients, friends and family.

The course is accreditated by The Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists and on successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate which will enable you to receive insurance cover.

This course is an intensive 2 day course where we use a variety of learning material including powerpoint presentations, textbook, demonstrations and hand on practical experience. After the initial 2 day course you are required to complete a portfolio of evidence including practical case studies and commit time to revise the theory work. You have the option to progress this course to an SVQ through our VTCT course programmes.

The course cost is £350+vat and includes an Eve Taylor Aromatherapy Skincase Kit worth over £100.

You will need to purchase The Lorraine Nordmann Foundations to Beauty Therapy Level 2 Book 5th Edition and a beauty tunic must be worn through the duration of the course. You may be required to bring a model but a course confirmation will explain this.
